Picnics |

Everyone loves a great picnic! Whether you are spending a quiet romantic afternoon with your special loved one or enjoying a loud and boisterous fun time with family and friends, picnics scream summer. Blue skies, green grass, delicious food, and great company make a picnic a joyous memory. Picnics can happen anywhere – a sunny meadow, a picturesque hilltop, along a mountain stream, or on a sandy beach. Here are some ideas for your next picnic from among the best picnic spots in the Bay Area.
Hayward Japanese Gardens
The Hayward Japanese Gardens is the first and oldest Japanese garden to be established in California. Located near downtown Hayward, the 3.5-acre area showcases traditional Japanese Garden art mixed with native California trees and plants. Not only is the Hayward Japanese Gardens a beautiful site for a picnic, but it is also a great place for everyone to learn about the garden’s history.
Crissy Field, San Francisco
With a picturesque view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field features a sandy beach on the bay with gentle windswept waves and beautiful weather – the perfect spot for a family picnic. Offering picnic tables with grills along the grassy field, there’s also a park store and café, the Warming Hut, in case you get hungry along your hike. Bring a change of clothes for the kids who will want to play in the bay and a jacket just in case the fog rolls in.
Redwood National Park
Redwood is known as the “Home to the Tallest Trees on Earth,” but there’s more! The park also protects extensive prairies, oak woodlands, wild river-ways, and almost 40-miles of rugged coastline. You can take a short or long hike to find the perfect spot to spread your picnic blanket. And if you’re enjoying Redwood a little too much, you can spend the night in any of its four well-developed campgrounds.
Municipal Rose Garden, San Jose
Thought by many to be “America’s Best Rose Garden,” the Municipal Rose Garden is over five acres filled with overflowing roses. With more than 4,000 rose bushes and nearly 200 varieties and expansive lawns with picnic tables, this may be the picnic spot you reserve for a romantic date with your loved one to “stop and smell the roses.”
Angel Island State Park
A lovely ferry accessible picnic awaits you and your family on Angel Island. Pack your family and friends, along with your picnic and head to the island for a day of fun and adventure. You can also grab a table at Ayala Cove and enjoy the expansive lawn area and views of the bay, or take your picnic blanket to the sandy beach at Camp Reynolds. Be sure to take the tram ride and relish 360-degree views of the bay.
Lake Merritt, Oakland
Looking for a picnic spot with an urban view? Lake Merritt is a three mile heart-shaped tidal lagoon that is located in the center of a very diverse city. With gardens, over 100 types of birds, and a recreation center, this is the ideal picnic spot for families and friends. Looking for an interactive picnic day? Lake Merritt also posts a “Things To Do” calendar with a listing of all its current activities.
