There is nothing like a scenic drive through the Bay Area to discover the region’s natural beauty from the panoramic mountains to the expansive coastal views. Read on to find the most breathtaking scenic roadways for an ideal road trip, date night, or whatever the occasion may be. What follows is the best of the bay – the top six scenic roadways in the Bay Area as chosen by the listeners of 96.5 KOIT, 102.9 KBLX, 99.7 NOW, and 98.5 KFOX.
Muir Woods to Mt. Tam (Panoramic Highway)
The region’s most scenic views are what you will find along the Panoramic Highway. A great place to begin your journey is Mt. Tam where you’ll be treated to the panorama which encompasses Mount Diablo, the San Francisco Bay, the East Bay, the Marin County Hills, and on a clear day, even the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains. As you traverse the winding road down the mountain en route to the redwoods of Muir Woods, you will find plenty of photo spots along the way. The Panoramic Highway will lead you to Stinson Beach, where you can relax the day away soaking up the sun.
Pacific to Santa Cruz (Highway 1)

Highway 1, in its entirety, could be declared a scenic roadway, but the section between Pacific and Santa Cruz is lovely with its amazing views of the ocean. Along the way, there are many spots to stop and soak in the view. A great starting point is the bluffs at Mori Point. After, head south to Devils Side Bunker and explore the nearby beaches. Enjoy the view as you head south, ending your trek with a stop at Pigeon Point Lighthouse and finally Natural Bridges Beach in Santa Cruz.
The 49-mile Scenic Drive
This famous drive in San Francisco offers you the opportunity to see the city from your car, though you will have to deal with construction and construction along the way. The seagull signage will guide you to the city’s most well-known landmarks including Coit Tower, Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Park, Land’s End, the Presidio and more. This scenic route is truly eclectic and entertaining.
Skyline Boulevard
The mountain ridge road that is Skyline Boulevard is well worth the trip. Take your time along the way, and relish in the amazing views and scenery along its curvy roads. Unlike others here, Skyline Boulevard is a peaceful journey, dotted with picturesque vistas and perfect overlooks for photos along the way.
Sonoma Valley Winery Ramble
This scenic route takes you through incredible vineyard landscapes and offers the opportunity for wine sampling throughout the wine rich Sonoma Valley. Enjoy the picturesque countryside as you explore Dry Creek Valley, Chalk Hill Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley. The Sonoma Valley Winery Ramble may be the perfect autumn drive.
Berkeley Hills – Grizzly Peak Blvd/Wildcat Canyon Road
Start your trip through Tilden Park and the Berkeley Hills along this scenic roadway. At Fish Ranch, you’ll turn onto Grizzly Peak, taking the time to enjoy the vistas, as well as the panoramas of San Francisco and Berkeley. At Tilden Park, you can drive through or stop and hike. Mineral Springs is the ideal spot for a picnic. Don’t stop until you arrive at Inspiration Point!
